Unlike many other platforms, in
Android this capability is available to any application developer;
Android is designed for users to hop from app to app seamlessly and
for data to be ubiquitous and shareable, not kept in silos accessible
only from the home screen.

In this talk we’ll take a tour of integration points available to the
Android application developer. We’ll touch on opportunities to
integrate tightly with the platform itself and with the built-in
applications; on consuming data and services from other apps; on
exposing your own app’s data and services for consumption; and on
providing convenient entry points into your app itself.

Google Atlanta
Millennium at Midtown
10 10th Street NE
Suite 600
Atlanta, GA 30309
Phone: +1 404-487-9000
Fax: +1 404-487-9001

Please spread the word about this event and we look forward to seeing you there (anyone is welcome, come see us at the Google and have some pizza/drinks while catching a great session - plan on pitching in $5 if you want to drink beer). The theme here is that you can create concise, powerful Java code with these helpful libraries. Yes, I said "Java" and "concise" in the same sentence! Same place (Google Midtown, info below), 7PM Tuesday August 31st.

We all know Java has its rough spots, but Guava and Guice can help iron a lot of that out. Guava is packed with useful utilities that we'll explore, and Guice is a lightweight dependency injection framework that can help you better organize, test, and maintain code. Some of the features in these Google created open source libraries are slated to be included in Java 7.

I'll be presenting an overview on Guava and Guice. If you aren't familiar with these, this talk should be a great introduction. If you are familiar, please come and heckle me and help us out with questions and general discussion.

Robert Cooper will then be presenting an intro to GIN (GWT INjection). I don't know if he'll call it "Sipping on GIN and Guice" or not, that's his choice, but I'd note that that title is there for the taking. GIN is a dependency injection framework for GWT that is built on top of Guice.

Hope to see you there, and please help spread the word.

Google Atlanta
Millennium at Midtown
10 10th Street NE
Suite 600
Atlanta, GA 30309
Phone: +1 404-487-9000
Fax: +1 404-487-9001

July Meeting - Tues 27th, 7PM Google Midtown -- "Open Spaces Android"

I think it's officially official that Android is the new hotness. Several people have asked about a GTUG-Atlanta Android related event and here it is. Our first Android related session will be next Tuesday, the 27th, at 7PM -- "Open Spaces Android."

By Open Spaces Android we mean, keep it related to Android, but anything goes, and the group will decide the agenda from suggestions once we get there.

We'll bring a few topics to keep in mind, or to get things started, but really this is going to be an informal style gathering without a pre-defined speaker, and we hope it will be driven by what the group wants to talk about.

Some possible topics might include:

* Topic Talks (networking, databases, sensors, location, themes,
testing, more)

* Stupid Android Tricks (features, shortcuts, tips, etc.)

* Favorite Android Apps

* Device Lab (pass around some phones and check them out)

* Android Jokes (lolcat, Log.wtf, GRAVITY_THE_ISLAND, more)

* Android Toys

Google Atlanta
Millennium at Midtown
10 10th Street NE
Suite 600
Atlanta, GA 30309
Phone: +1 404-487-9000
Fax: +1 404-487-9001

June Meeting - Google I/O Recap

GTUG Atlanta will be meeting June 29th (last Tues) at Google midtown, 7PM, for a Google I/O recap.

Google I/O is a developer focused technical conference that Google puts on each year. For complete I/O coverage you can see the session abstracts and watch the videos (which are excellent) here:
http://code.google.com/events/io/2010/sessions.html.

Our GTUG agenda will be to have a brief overview of I/O in general (with pictures and discussion of the happenings), and then we'll dive into specifics. Robert Cooper will tell us about all of the new stuff in Android Froyo, and Chris Ramsdale will talk about updates surrounding GWT and AppEngine. After the more formal talks we'll wind up with our usual open forum discussion (and lightning talks, ~5 mins or less, are welcome too).

We'll have beer, soft drinks, and pizza for those that are willing to make a donation to the cause (pitch in 5 bucks for the refreshments).

Hope to see you there, and please spread the word!

Google Atlanta
Millennium at Midtown
10 10th Street NE
Suite 600
Atlanta, GA 30309
Phone: +1 404-487-9000
Fax: +1 404-487-9001

*UPDATE (date changed)* Next Meeting - April 27th 2010

Next meeting 4-27-2010 7PM at Google Midtown.

Google Atlanta
Millennium at Midtown
10 10th Street NE
Suite 600
Atlanta, GA 30309
Phone: +1 404-487-9000
Fax: +1 404-487-9001

Agenda:

Rick Thomas -- Wave Development

David Chandler -- GWT and AppEngine

Lightning Talks

General Discussion

Note that this meeting will NOT have food and drink provided unless we all agree to pitch in 5 bucks or such. (We will likely have time for 5-6 of these per meeting, so everyone may not get a chance each time, but I will bring a sign up sheet or such, if you don't get a chance on one occasion, there will be another.)

A few procedural notes about the setup, attendees will have to sign the standard Google Badge/Meeting NDA (I will attach a PDF copy of the agreement to this group for review, nothing shocking in it, just standard letting you in to the inner sanctum type stuff), and there is no free parking at the building. The building has a 24/7 parking lot that accepts credit cards, just not free. Another option is the 10th street MARTA station which is right next to the building.

Hope to see you there! I would like to have a meeting later this month, to get on schedule for once a month in 2010. I Heard from Googler Chris Ramsdale today that we can likely use the meeting room at Google Midtown! Woot. With that all that is left really is a little recruiting, an agenda, and coming up with something to say!

As for general meeting format I think the idea of a mixed mode, with some time allotted for lightning talks, and then some time for a pre-planned speaker, is my favorite. I would like to organize things that way. 30 mins or so of anyone who wants to speak (with a strict 5 minute time limit, JavaPosse style), and then 30 for a speaker, and 15 or so for questions and general mayhem. Not too long, not too short.

I will make sure to keep this site up to date with the latest details.

Bootstrapping phase!

I am just getting started setting up an Atlanta GTUG.
